Overview

  • Duration:2 days 1 night
  • Travelers:1 - 15 guests
  • Tour Type:Group tour, Multi-day tour
  • Language:English
This itinerary is for travellers who like their history with layers. You begin on the Gallipoli Peninsula, where the hills and ridges are still marked by trenches and cemeteries from the First World War. From there you cross the Dardanelles to Troy, where myth and archaeology overlap. Further south you reach the classical world of Ephesus, once a major Roman port, and the thermal terraces and ancient spa town of Pamukkale & Hierapolis.

The final act takes place in Cappadocia. After days of shorelines and ruins, you suddenly find yourself in a landscape of soft rock, fairy chimneys and cave dwellings. You sleep in a cave or stone hotel, explore an underground city and, if you wish, float above it all in a hot-air balloon at sunrise.

Transport, hotels and local guides are all arranged in advance. You follow a clear route across western and central Turkey, watching the story shift from modern war history to ancient legend and finally to a landscape that feels almost unreal.

Itinerary

Day 1: Istanbul → Gallipoli Battlefields

You leave Istanbul in the morning by coach, crossing the European side and heading west toward the Gallipoli Peninsula. After a comfort stop on the highway, you reach the Dardanelles and the narrow strip of land where the Allied landings took place in 1915.

In the afternoon you join a Gallipoli battlefield tour. The route typically includes:

  • ANZAC Cove – the small beach where Australian and New Zealand troops first came ashore.
  • Beach Cemetery – simple, quiet headstones by the sea.
  • Lone Pine Cemetery & Memorial – the main Australian memorial on the peninsula.
  • The Nek – a narrow ridge where troops charged over open ground.
  • Chunuk Bair – the key high point and main New Zealand memorial, with sweeping views over the Dardanelles.

Your guide combines maps, stories and quiet pauses at the cemeteries; it’s a day that many visitors find moving and reflective.

In the early evening, you check into your hotel in Çanakkale or Eceabat. Free time for dinner and a walk along the waterfront.
Overnight in Çanakkale or Eceabat.

Day 2: Troy → Aegean Coast

After breakfast and check-out, you cross the Dardanelles (if staying on the European side) and head to Troy, about half an hour away. Here you explore the archaeological site, where several layers of city have been built on top of each other over millennia.

You see the remains of city walls and gates, foundations of houses and temples, and a small theatre. Your guide explains how the Troy of legend fits with what archaeologists have found, and you’ll hear the stories of Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse. A modern wooden horse near the entrance helps bring the myth to life for photos.

Around midday you continue by coach along the Aegean coast, driving past olive groves, small towns and sea views. Depending on timing and program, there may be a stop near Bergama, gateway to ancient Pergamon, for lunch and a short look toward the acropolis on the hill.

By late afternoon or early evening you arrive in Kuşadası or Selçuk, check into your hotel and have the evening free to settle in.
Overnight on the Aegean coast.

Day 3: Ephesus & House of Virgin Mary

After breakfast, you join a full-day Ephesus tour.

The day usually begins at the House of the Virgin Mary, a small stone chapel in the forested hills. Pilgrims and visitors alike appreciate the peaceful setting; many choose to light a candle or leave a written wish at the wall outside.

You then drive down to the ancient city of Ephesus. Entering from the upper gate, you walk slowly along marble streets, past the Odeon, public baths and the Temple of Hadrian. If time and your ticket allow, you may visit the Terrace Houses (an optional extra with well-preserved mosaics and wall paintings).

The route leads you to the famous façade of the Library of Celsus, one of the most recognisable sights in Turkey, and then to the Great Theatre, which once seated tens of thousands of people. Lunch is served at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you stop at the site of the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and—depending on the day—either the Isa Bey Mosque or the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk.

You return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Evening free for a seafront walk or dinner in town.
Overnight on the Aegean coast.

Day 4: Aegean to Pamukkale

After breakfast and check-out, you drive inland toward Pamukkale, a journey of around 2.5–3 hours. The coach passes through small towns, orchards and cotton fields, with a short stop on the way for tea or coffee.

On arrival in the Pamukkale area, you check into your hotel and have some time to rest. Depending on the timing and season, you may be able to walk up to the village to see the terraces from below or simply relax by the pool or in the hotel’s thermal facilities.

The rest of the day is free – a slightly quieter pause before you explore the terraces and ancient ruins in more depth tomorrow.
Overnight in Pamukkale area.

Day 5: Pamukkale & Hierapolis → Cappadocia

After breakfast you join your Pamukkale & Hierapolis tour.

You begin in Hierapolis, the ancient spa city built above the terraces. You walk through the necropolis, pass old tombs and sarcophagi, and follow the line of the ancient main street to the Roman theatre, which has been partially restored and offers a wide view over the valley. Your guide explains how people once came here seeking healing in the hot springs.

Then you descend toward the famous travertine terraces of Pamukkale. From afar they look like snow or sugar; up close you see terraced pools with milky-blue water and a soft, chalky surface created by mineral deposits. You remove your shoes and follow the marked path barefoot, feeling warm water flow around your feet as you walk.

If you wish, you can pay the extra local fee to swim in Cleopatra Antique Pool, a thermal pool dotted with fallen Roman columns.

In the late afternoon or evening, you transfer to the airport—either Denizli or a nearby alternative, depending on the day’s schedule—for your flight to Cappadocia (sometimes via Istanbul or another hub). On arrival in Cappadocia, a driver meets you and takes you to your cave or stone hotel.
Overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 6: Cappadocia Balloon (Optional) & North Cappadocia

Before dawn, guests who pre-booked it are collected for an optional hot-air balloon flight. You’re driven to the launch site, watch the balloons inflate in the grey light and then rise gently above the valleys as the sun colours the landscape. After landing and a light celebration, you return to your hotel for breakfast.

Late morning, you join your North Cappadocia tour. Typical stops include:

  • Devrent (Imagination) Valley – unusual rock formations in animal-like shapes.
  • Paşabağı (Monks Valley) – striking fairy chimneys with multiple caps, once used as hermit dwellings.
  • Avanos – pottery town on the Kızılırmak River, with lunch and a short pottery workshop visit.
  • Göreme or Zelve Open-Air Museum – rock-cut churches and chapels adorned with frescoes.
  • A panoramic viewpoint for sunset-style photos over the valleys.

You return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Evening free to wander the village, find a rooftop bar or simply rest in your cave room.
Overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 7: South Cappadocia → Flight back to Istanbul

After breakfast and check-out, you join your South Cappadocia tour.

The day usually includes:

  • A walk through Red or Rose Valley, where coloured rock and soft paths weave around small cave churches and pigeon houses.
  • Visit to Çavuşin village, with its rock houses and cliff-side church.
  • Lunch in a local restaurant.
  • Visit to an underground city (Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu), descending through tunnels and rooms where early Christians once hid during times of danger.
  • Final photo stops at Pigeon Valley and a viewpoint near Uçhisar Castle.

In the late afternoon, you’re transferred to Kayseri or Nevşehir airport for your evening flight back to Istanbul. On arrival, our driver meets you and takes you to your central Istanbul hotel or directly to the international terminal if you’re flying onward.

Tour ends on arrival in Istanbul.

Frequently asked questions

This looks like a lot of travel. Is it very tiring?

It’s a busy but balanced itinerary. There are a few longer coach days (Istanbul–Gallipoli and the move from the Aegean to Pamukkale), but we break them up with sights and rest stops. Two nights on the Aegean and two nights in Cappadocia help you settle into each region rather than changing hotels every night.

Is this mainly for history buffs?

It’s perfect if you’re interested in history, but the trip isn’t only about dates and battles. You get WWI history at Gallipoli, myth and archaeology at Troy, classical Roman remains at Ephesus and Hierapolis, and dramatic natural landscapes at Pamukkale and Cappadocia. Non-history-lovers usually enjoy the variety of scenery and experiences.

Can I skip some of the more demanding parts, like the underground city?

Yes. The underground city in Cappadocia has narrow, low tunnels which some guests find challenging. You can choose to stay at ground level or only visit the first level while the rest of the group goes deeper. Similarly, if walking on uneven surfaces is difficult, you can skip certain sections and wait at nearby cafes or rest areas.

Is this better done in one direction or the other?

We recommend ending in Cappadocia, as written here. After several days of coastal and historical stops, arriving in Cappadocia feels like a reward: the landscape is dramatic, the pace in the villages is calmer, and the optional balloon flight is a memorable way to finish the trip before returning to Istanbul.
