Overview

  • Duration:2 days 1 night
  • Travelers:1 - 15 guests
  • Tour Type:Group tour, Multi-day tour
  • Language:English
This itinerary is for travellers who want maximum impact in minimum time. In three days you move from Istanbul’s skyline to Cappadocia’s dreamlike valleys and then to the marble streets of Ephesus, without touching a night bus or worrying about logistics.

You begin with an early flight to Cappadocia, where the air feels drier, the light is clearer and the ground looks like it’s been carved by hand. A local guide meets you at the airport and takes you straight into the valleys: slender fairy chimneys, cave chapels and panoramic viewpoints. At sunset you check into your cave or stone hotel and watch the colours change on the rocks.

On the second day you can join an optional hot-air balloon flight at sunrise – floating quietly above the valleys while dozens of other balloons rise around you – before exploring the underground side of Cappadocia. In the evening you fly to the Aegean coast and settle into a hotel near Ephesus.

Your final day is all about history. Ephesus is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean: long marble avenues, a giant theatre and the famous façade of the Library of Celsus. You also visit the peaceful House of the Virgin Mary on the hill above. By the time your plane lands back in Istanbul at night, you’ve seen landscapes and ruins that most visitors never manage to combine in a single trip.

Itinerary

Day 1: Istanbul → Cappadocia & Fairy Chimneys

Very early in the morning, our driver collects you from your Istanbul hotel and takes you to the airport. After a short flight (about 1–1.5 hours), you land in Cappadocia, where a local representative is waiting at the exit.

You join your small-group tour and head straight into North Cappadocia. The first stop is usually Devrent (Imagination) Valley, where the wind has shaped the soft rock into strange animal-like forms. It’s a relaxed walk and a good place to understand how the landscape was formed.

Next you continue to Paşabağı (Monks Valley), home to some of the most photogenic fairy chimneys in the region – tall pillars with twin and triple caps. Your guide shows you the small cave chapels and hermit cells carved into the rock, explaining how monks once lived here.

Around midday you drive to Avanos by the Kızılırmak River for lunch in a local restaurant. Afterwards you see a short pottery demonstration in a traditional workshop; if you like, you can try the wheel yourself.

In the afternoon you visit Göreme Open-Air Museum or Zelve Open-Air Museum (depending on the route that day), a cluster of rock-cut churches and chapels decorated with frescoes that have survived for centuries. Towards late afternoon you stop at a panoramic viewpoint over the valleys or Uçhisar Castle for wide-angle photos.

After the tour you’re dropped at your cave or stone hotel for check-in. Evening free: wander the streets, find a terrace for sunset, or join an optional Turkish night show.
Overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 2: Cappadocia Balloon & Underground City → Flight to Izmir

If you’ve opted for it, the day starts before dawn with a hot-air balloon flight. You’re picked up from your hotel and driven to the launch site for tea, coffee and a light snack while the balloons inflate. The flight lasts around an hour, floating over valleys, vineyards and fairy chimneys as the sun rises. After landing and a simple celebration, you’re returned to the hotel in time for breakfast.

Late morning you join your South Cappadocia tour. The program usually includes a gentle walk through one of the coloured valleys – Red or Rose Valley – where the rock glows pink and orange in the daylight. You then visit Çavuşin, an old cave village with rock houses and a hilltop church.

After lunch in a local restaurant, you drive to one of Cappadocia’s underground cities (Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu, depending on the day). You explore several levels of tunnels and rooms: kitchens, wineries, storage areas and narrow passages used by early Christians as hiding places. Those who prefer not to go underground can wait at ground level or join a shorter section.

A final photo stop at Pigeon Valley or a similar viewpoint rounds off your time in Cappadocia. In the late afternoon or evening, you’re transferred to the airport for your flight to Izmir. On arrival, another driver meets you and takes you to your hotel in Kuşadası or Selçuk, the main bases for visiting Ephesus.
Overnight on the Aegean coast (Kuşadası or Selçuk).

Day 3: Ephesus & House of Virgin Mary → Istanbul

After breakfast you’re picked up for a full-day Ephesus tour. The first stop is often the House of the Virgin Mary, a small stone chapel on a wooded hillside where many believe Mary spent her final years. The atmosphere is calm and respectful; you’ll have time for photos and to light a candle if you wish.

You then drive down to the ancient city of Ephesus. Entering through the upper gate, you walk slowly along the marble streets past the Odeon, Roman baths, Temple of Hadrian and other public buildings. The route leads to the impressive façade of the Library of Celsus and the vast Great Theatre, which once held around 25,000 spectators. Your guide brings the ruins to life with stories of traders, sailors and early Christians who once lived here.

After a lunch break at a local restaurant, you visit the remains of the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and—depending on the day and opening times—either the Isa Bey Mosque or the Ephesus Archaeological Museum.

In the late afternoon you’re transferred to Izmir or Denizli airport (depending on the flight schedule) for your evening flight back to Istanbul. On arrival, our driver meets you at the airport and drops you at your central Istanbul hotel.
Tour ends on arrival at your hotel.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do we actually spend in each area?

Roughly one and a half days are spent in Cappadocia (two touring days with one overnight), and almost a full day is dedicated to Ephesus and its surroundings. Flights are timed to minimise wasted hours in transit, but exact schedules depend on airline availability.

Is the tour suitable if I’m afraid of tight spaces?

The underground city in Cappadocia includes some narrow tunnels and low ceilings. If you’re claustrophobic, you can choose to skip the deeper levels or wait in a nearby area above ground while the rest of the group explores. All other sites are open-air or spacious.

What is the luggage allowance on the domestic flights?

Most Turkish domestic tickets in economy allow around 15–20 kg of checked luggage plus 8 kg of cabin baggage per person. We recommend travelling with one medium suitcase and a small hand luggage for comfort and easier transfers.

Can this itinerary be done as a private tour?

Yes. On request we can upgrade this program to a fully private tour with your own vehicle, driver and guide in each region, and with higher-category hotels. This is ideal for families, couples wanting more privacy, or travelers who prefer a slower pace.
